SQUADRON A.T.C.
I joined the 1890 squadron Dronfield A.T.C
If I remember rightly pre 1943.
Our base was at the grammar school
Tuesday and Friday nights.
With Sunday morning church parade
And summer training flights.
Our officers were gentlemen
Highly trained in their positions.
They taught us Morse code and squad drills
And aircraft recognition.
Soon we left the grammar school
And found a new H, Q.
A catholic chapel on the steps
Then our squadron numbers grew.
One day while at a summer camp
A German bomber came.
He flew in low and dropped two bombs
And then flew off again.
Both the bombs failed to explode
Which was good news no doubt.
Then the men from bomb disposal came
And took the fuses out.
After the war was over
With the enemy defeated.
Interest in the squadron fell
And our ranks sadly depleted.
