SNOW WHITE IN RHYME
Long, long ago in the days of the knights
Lived a beautiful Princess whose name was Snow White.
The fame of her beauty was spread far and wide,
And her wicked stepmother’s jealousy of her was hard to hide.
Each day the Queen would say to her mirror on the wall
Who is the most beautiful person of all?
The mirror would reply there’s no doubt my Queen,
You are the most beautiful one I’ve ever seen.
Then one day the mirror gave the Queen a dreadful fright
By saying she wasn’t the most beautiful, but it was Snow White.
This news sent the Queen seething with wrath
And she sent for her woodsman to see Snow White off.
“Take her to the forest and slay her” she said,
“And bring back her heart to prove she is dead”
But the woodsman was kind and he loved Snow White,
So when he returned to the Old Queen later that night,
He gave her the heart of a wild boar that he’d slain
And the sight of it eased the Old Queens jealous pain.
For now she would be the most beautiful one,
Now that her stepdaughter, Snow White had gone.
Meanwhile poor Snow White was alone in the wood,
Frightened, hungry and not feeling too good.
She staggered and stumbled, through the bushes and trees,
Every noise that she heard made her quake at her knees.
Till she came to a picturesque cottage of rustic stone
She knocked on the door but no one was at home.
When she got no reply to her call “is anyone there?”
She entered the home and sat in the nearest armchair.
Breathless and frightened she started to weep
Before going to the bedroom to fall fast a sleep.
She awoke later when she heard someone speak
And footsteps on the floorboards causing them to creak.
Then into the bedroom rushed seven little men
And when they saw Snow White they rushed out again.
They fell downstairs and rolled out of the door
As they’d never seen anyone like Snow White before.
Then all of a sudden, one stopped in his tracks
And said to the others we’ve got to go back.
We can’t let this person take over our home
If you won’t come back, I’ll go in on my own.
So Doc who was their leader went back up the stairs,
Where he found Snow White saying her prayers.
Doc said to her kindly “now come on my dear
Please tell me slowly why are you here?”
You gave us a shock when we walked through the door
And when all’s said and done, you’re breaking the law.
Then Snow White told Doc what the Old Queen had done
When she was no longer the most beautiful one.
Doc listened intently to what Snow White had to say
That the Queen in her jealous rage, wanted her out of the way.
He said in a kind voice “my dear you’ve no need to fear
Your wicked stepmother will not harm you here.
You must keep the door locked while we’re at the mine
And don’t open the door until we get home at teatime”.
“That’s right,” said the other dwarfs Happy and Sleepy,
Bashful, Grumpy, Dopey and Sneezy.
For when the Old Queen gets to know you’re still living
She’ll search far and wide for she’s not very forgiving.
So take every precaution while we are away
Just in case the Queen finds this cottage one-day.
The Queen now thinks she is the most beautiful one
After her deadly deed by the woodsman had been done.
But to her dismay and anger later that night
The mirror said she was not so beautiful as Snow White.
“How can it be?” The Queen replied,
“That Snow White was still alive and hadn’t died”.
The Queen was furious, she said “I’ll seek and find
Then I’ll poison Snow White for my own peace of mind”.
Meanwhile Snow White had forgot what the dwarfs had said
And left the door open whilst baking some bread.
Hearing a noise she looked to see who was there
It was a little old lady with long straggly grey hair.
Unbeknown to Snow White it was the Queen in disguise
With a basket of full of apples, and a gleam in her eyes.
Will you try my red apples they’re fresh from the dell?
But Snow White didn’t know they were poisoned as well.
So she took a large bite of an apple so rosy and red
And within minutes she collapsed and appeared to be dead.
This filled the wicked Old Queen with apparent delight
And she mumbled a curse before disappearing out of sight.
“My dear you will sleep for one hundred years,
Unless in the future a young Prince appears
And awakes you from sleep with a long loving kiss,
Till then my dear Snow White you’ll remain like this”.
Then the Old Queen left Snow White alone on the floor
And fled swiftly away without closing the door.
All the animals and birds who knew Snow White
Saw what had happened and knew something wasn’t right.
So they went to tell the dwarfs what they’d seen,
That Snow White had been poisoned by the wicked old Queen.
So with their shovels and picks on their backs
They hurried home down the mountain tracks.
They arrived to find Snow White lying on the floor
Where she had fallen, right next to the open door.
Her sweet lips were blue and her face deathly pale
The seven dwarfs panicked and started to wail.
They fell on their knees and started to pray
Besides Snow White where she lay.
They cursed the Old Queen for casting a spell
Repeatedly wishing that she were in hell.
Then Doc who was leader said, “let’s all calm down
Early tomorrow we will all go into town
And purchase a coffin made out of fine glass
So we can see and admire our beautiful young lass”.
The seven dwarfs knew very well
That somehow they had to break this spell.
So they decided to advertise in their local gazette,
For a handsome young Prince who wasn’t married yet.
As the years passed by Snow White never stirred
Then one sunny day a young Prince had heard.
The sad news of a young sleeping beauty
So he travelled to the cottage to do his duty.
He looked at her and fell in love at first sight
As he kissed the sweet lips of the beautiful Snow White.
Her eyes opened and she had awoken
The wicked Queens spell had been broken.
The seven dwarfs invited the Prince to stay
And he and Snow White were married the very next day.
They all lived happily together as one big happy family
And so that is the end of this fairytale storey.
