MILESTONES IN MY LIFE

I was born and bred in Dronfield,
In the county of North East Derbyshire.
It was January, nineteen-twenty six
The beginning of an eventful first year.
A coal mine strike was taking place
It seemed to last for ages
And all because of the coal-miners
Would not take a drop in wages.
I started school in thirty-one
And left in nineteen-forty
By then a war had just started
Against the Nazi party.
They bombed us with their aeroplanes
Attacked us with their subs.
But the British bulldog fighting spirit
Beat those vicious Nazi thugs.
We now move on to forty-eight
When I met a girl called Ida
I married her in fifty-one
And got drunk on a pint of cider.
The children came as years passed by
Till nineteen-sixty four
And if I remember rightly
Six was the final score.
The first was a girl
And then two boys
A girl, a boy and another girl.
It happened so quickly
My heads still in a whirl.
Now they’ve all grown up
And five have finally gone.
Leaving me and wife
And eldest son “John”
The next milestone came in nineteen-ninety four
As it affected my whole life.
It was one of my saddest years
As I lost my beloved wife.
I’m going grey and old now
And I’ve reached the present time.
The milestones of my life
Are coming to an end with this little rhyme.
