LAND ARMY GIRLS

Many girls from all walks of life
Joined the forgotten army
These girls did their bit in the war
Working on land, while sunny or stormy.

To keep the nation fit and well
These girls went to work on the land
There was a job to be done, couldn’t fire a gun
But they all had to lend a hand.

They worked on farms, also in fields
They had to hoe and seed
Grow barley wheat and potatoes
Spending hours removing the weeds.

The uniform was awful, too big for some
They wore breeches and a tie.
Also a hat, and big rubber boots
In all months, even July.

To have  a night out, was a pleasure
To local  dances, or a picture show
But for some a hot bath was just heaven
All this happened  many years ago.

For some girls. It was their first time away
Yet they did make many friends.
They never forgot their time in the war
So many girls still correspond.
