FOR MY DAUGHTER

Here’s the poem I normally write to tell you how I feel,
You told me you were pregnant all those weeks ago,
You started getting bigger, you really started to show,
You were getting closer to being a mother,
It never really seemed real.

All the weeks went by,
The moods, the swings, the need to really eat,
All the good days, all the bad days,
Even those swollen feet.

Your dad and I were quietly watching,
Knowing the day would soon be near,
Knowing you would soon have someone,
Oh so dear.

That day was over a year ago,
When little Sean came into the world,
You thought you were having a girl, instead you had a boy,
But oh what a little wonder, oh what a little joy.

He’s been a blessing, though you didn’t think so at first,
But as the days and months went by, he was over the worst.

Oh dear, darling Sean,
Such a real treat you have been,
I’ve loved every minute.

Pity you couldn’t start it all anew,
I love you with all my heart, Sean,
Really I do, through and through.
