A FAMILY HOME
What secrets are hidden within your walls?
So much you cannot tell
About the people you have housed
Who've come to love you well;
Just looking at your old façade
Who'd guess what lies behind
The windows and the doors therein
What stories they would find.
Over the years you've made a home
For people young and old,
And happiness and sadness too
Within your portals hold;
Childish laughter on your stairs
In nooks and crannies too
A family house is what you are,
All ages have loved you;
A young girl's dream you've seen come true
As she became a bride
So many family events
Are hidden deep inside.
The trauma of a loved one lost,
When sadness filled the room
But leaving behind sweet memories
So there's no need for gloom.
A quiet place to contemplate,
A place for shedding tears,
A joyful place to sing and run,
You've been all those for years;
Your garden too holds much delight
For a family like ours,
As young and old have lingered there
For many happy hours.
Some dreams came true, heartbreak as well
Have been part of your days
And you were silent but we felt
You understood our ways;
With heavy heart we leave you now
For we are only two,
But we'll take with us everywhere
The joy we've found in you;
The family gatherings 'neath your roof,
The happiness we've found there
We leave within you dear old house
For other folk to share.
